Large cat breeds

Large cat breeds fascinate with an imposing build, dense coats and an often surprisingly gentle nature. At five to over nine kilograms, the "gentle giants" weigh considerably more than the average domestic cat — and need more space, sturdier scratching posts and a little more food in return.

Here you find 26 large cat breeds with all key facts — filtered and comparable.

What defines large cat breeds

Cats with a typical weight from about five kilograms count as large; individual toms reach eight to nine kilograms and more. Beyond weight, the build matters: large breeds are usually long, muscular and heavy-boned. Many of them grow particularly slowly and are only fully grown at three to four years.

Popular large breeds

  • Maine Coon — the "gentle giant" and one of the largest domestic cat breeds of all.
  • Ragdoll — large, heavy and famous for its relaxed, affectionate nature.
  • Norwegian Forest Cat and Siberian — robust, weatherproof natural breeds.

What to watch with large cats

Large breeds need sturdy equipment (load-bearing scratching posts, large litter trays) but often have a very even temperament. Watch breed-typically for heart health (HCM) and in some lines for hip joints. Unsure whether a large cat suits your living situation? Our "Which cat fits me?" test matches your everyday life against all breeds.

Keeping large cats in a flat

A large cat needs more space than a petite one — but that does not mean it necessarily needs a house with a garden. What matters is a three-dimensional home: stable, tall climbing furniture, wide resting surfaces that carry the weight, and enough floor space to romp. Many large breeds such as the Ragdoll are decidedly calm and do very well in a generous flat, while more active giants such as the Maine Coon benefit from secured outdoor access or a catio.

Costs and grooming of large breeds

More cat means somewhat higher running costs: large breeds eat more, and appropriately sized equipment costs more. Semi-longhaired giants such as the Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat or Siberian also need regular brushing, more often during moulting. Plan for that from the start — the cat cost calculator gives you a guide.
