Traits
Origin & history
Philadelphia, 1960s: Siamese breeder Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty found three kittens with white paws in a purebred litter and — instead of hiding the "fault" — built a breed on it, adding American Shorthair for the bicolour genetics. The white spotting proved genetically capricious: perfectly symmetrical boots and the beloved inverted-V face blaze follow no reliable recipe, which kept the Snowshoe rare and every individual a one-off. Internet fame arrived decades later — Grumpy Cat was a Snowshoe mix.
Appearance & size
A moderate, athletic three-to-five-kilogram build between its founder breeds: neither Siamese-extreme nor Shorthair-cobby. Points in seal and blue over white boots — ideally to the ankle in front, to the hock behind — plus white chest and the V-blaze, with vivid blue eyes. No two Snowshoes wear identical markings.
Personality & temperament
The Snowshoe took the Siamese heart and turned the volume to conversational: it is deeply people-glued — often electing a favourite — chatty in soft, melodic tones, clever with doors and drawers, and playful with a famous water-paddling streak. Alone it suffers audibly; with company it is sunshine. The Shorthair heritage added a stabilising calm the pure oriental lines lack.
Indoor or outdoor living
Indoors with secured balcony: trusting, rare and valuable is the roaming-risk trifecta. Moderate space plus company covers the needs — a second social cat carries work hours; see keeping several cats.
Enrichment & activity
Daily interactive sessions: fetch, teaser hunts, puzzle feeders and water games at the tap. Mid-range energy with real engagement needs — and real sofa evenings on your lap afterwards.
Grooming
A weekly polish suffices for the short, close coat; shedding stays modest.
Feeding & health
A robust cross-heritage breed; ask breeders for PRA and amyloidosis line history (Siamese side) plus general heart checks. Portion via the food amount calculator.
Costs
Kittens cost €800–1,200 where found — the capricious genetics keep supply small and waiting lists real. Running costs are modest; the cat cost calculator totals them.
For beginners, children and other pets
A warm family cat: playful with children, sociable with cats and friendly dogs, and beginner-suitable where company is guaranteed. The velcro streak is the one commitment to plan for.
Similar breeds compared
The Siamese is the louder, leggier ancestor; the Birman wears white gloves on semi-long calm; the Tonkinese matches the softened-oriental niche in mink dress.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Snowshoe so rare?
The white-spotting genetics are capricious: symmetric boots and the V-blaze follow no recipe, so show-quality kittens stay scarce.
Are Snowshoes loud like Siamese?
Softer — melodic, conversational chatter instead of opera. The devotion, though, is full Siamese.
Was Grumpy Cat a Snowshoe?
A Snowshoe mix — the famous face carried the breed's markings into internet history.
Which health questions matter?
PRA and amyloidosis line history from the Siamese side, plus general heart checks.
Do Snowshoes like water?
Many paddle enthusiastically at taps and bowls — a charming breed streak.
Can a Snowshoe stay alone?
Poorly — the velcro heart needs company. A second social cat makes working households work.
