Can cats eat xylitol?
No — the sweetener xylitol can crash blood sugar and damage the liver. Chewing gum, "sugar-free" sweets and toothpaste belong out of reach.
Which substance is dangerous?
Xylitol (birch sugar) triggers a massive insulin release in dogs, crashing blood sugar, and liver damage has been described; for cats the data is thinner, but the same mechanisms are assumed — and no safe amount is established. Xylitol hides in chewing gum, "sugar-free" sweets and baked goods, some peanut butters and toothpaste.
How much is dangerous?
Unknown for cats — treat every ingestion as potentially dangerous. Sugar-free chewing gum is the classic source, as single pieces already carry relevant amounts.
Symptoms of poisoning
Signs of hypoglycaemia within 30 to 60 minutes: weakness, staggering, tremors, cramps up to loss of consciousness; liver damage can follow days later.
Emergency: what to do?
Xylitol ingested? Go to the vet immediately — hypoglycaemia develops fast and is treatable if caught early. Take the packaging and state the amount.

Frequently asked questions
Where does xylitol hide?
In sugar-free chewing gum and sweets, some baked goods and peanut butters, dental care products and as birch sugar in home baking.
Is erythritol or stevia also toxic?
They are considered less dangerous, but sweeteners have no place in cat feeding at all. Keep everything "sugar-free" away from the cat.
My cat chewed on gum — vet?
Yes, immediately, if it was sugar-free gum. Hypoglycaemia can develop within the hour and is treatable when caught early.
Why is xylitol in toothpaste a problem?
Cats that lick toothpaste tubes take in xylitol and fluoride. Store dental products closed and away.
