Can cats drink alcohol?
No — alcohol is life-threatening for cats even in the smallest amounts. Beware of open glasses, boozy desserts and raw yeast dough, which produces alcohol.
Which substance is dangerous?
Ethanol depresses the central nervous system, and a cat's small body and slow alcohol metabolism turn sips into overdoses. What knocks a human slightly tipsy can put a 4 kg cat into a coma. Alcohol hides in cream desserts, liqueur pralines, eggnog — and forms in the stomach when raw yeast dough is eaten.
How much is dangerous?
Already a few millilitres of an alcoholic drink are dangerous; high-proof spirits are acutely life-threatening. There is no harmless sip.
Symptoms of poisoning
Staggering, disorientation, vomiting, drooling, slowed breathing, hypothermia, cramps up to loss of consciousness — beginning within 30 to 60 minutes.
Emergency: what to do?
Alcohol ingested? This is an emergency: go to the vet or emergency service immediately. Keep the cat warm on the way and state what and how much was drunk. Do not induce vomiting.
