Can cats eat sausage?
Sausage is salty, fatty and usually seasoned — at most a mini piece of a mild variety as a rare exception. Varieties with onion, garlic or pepper are off limits.
Why sausage for cats?
Sausage looks like meat but is a heavily processed product: salt, fat, curing agents and seasoning — frequently including onion and garlic powder, which are toxic to cats. A tiny piece of a mild, lean sausage will not topple a healthy cat, but sausage has no place in regular feline feeding.
How much is okay?
A pea-sized piece as a rare exception at most — and only of mild varieties whose ingredients you know. When in doubt, skip it.
How to feed it?
If at all, mild cooked sausage without visible seasoning. Off limits: salami and cured raw sausage, liver sausage in quantity, anything with garlic, onion, pepper or chilli, and sausage skins.
Risks & caution
Salt and fat strain kidneys and weight; onion and garlic in the seasoning are toxic; raw sausage products carry the risks of raw pork. Pancreatitis-prone cats react badly to fatty sausage.
Can kittens have sausage?
No sausage for kittens — too salty, too fatty, potentially toxic seasoning. There is nothing to gain here.
Signs of intolerance
Vomiting, diarrhoea or noticeable thirst after sausage are signals to stop. If a garlic- or onion-seasoned sausage was eaten in quantity, call the vet.

Frequently asked questions
Can cats eat salami?
No — salami is raw cured sausage, heavily salted and seasoned, often with garlic. Keep it away.
Can cats eat liver sausage?
A fingertip of mild liver sausage occasionally is popular as a medication carrier and usually tolerated — as an exception, not a habit.
Why is seasoning in sausage a problem?
Onion and garlic powder are toxic to cats even in small, regular doses; pepper and chilli irritate the digestive tract.
My cat stole a piece of sausage — how bad?
A one-off small piece of mild sausage is usually no cause for panic. Watch the cat and check the ingredients for onion or garlic; call the vet if in doubt.
