Can cats eat ham?
A mini piece of lean, cooked ham occasionally is tolerated — but ham is salty and processed. Cured, smoked and raw ham are unsuitable.
Why ham for cats?
Ham is meat, yes — but processed meat. Salt, curing agents and often smoke make it a food to hand out sparingly. A pea-sized piece of lean cooked ham will not harm a healthy cat; regular ham servings, however, load the kidneys with salt the carnivore never asked for.
How much is okay?
A mini piece as a rare exception. Ham should never be a regular treat — for that, plain cooked chicken is the far better choice.
How to feed it?
If at all, lean, mildly salted cooked ham without rind, herbs or pepper crust. Unsuitable: raw ham (parma, serrano), smoked and heavily cured varieties, and anything with garlic or pepper coating.
Risks & caution
The salt and curing agents strain kidneys and circulation; the fat adds calories. Cats with kidney or heart conditions get no ham at all. Raw pork historically carried the Aujeszky virus risk — another reason raw pork products are off limits.
Can kittens have ham?
Not for kittens — too salty, too processed. Kitten food and at most plain cooked chicken as a treat.
Signs of intolerance
Increased thirst after salty treats is a warning sign. Vomiting or diarrhoea after ham mean dropping it entirely.

Frequently asked questions
Can cats eat cooked ham?
A pea-sized, lean piece occasionally is tolerated. Regularly, ham is too salty and too processed.
Is raw ham like parma or serrano allowed?
No. Raw, cured pork products are heavily salted and raw pork carries disease risks — off the menu.
Why is salt a problem for cats?
Cats are small animals with sensitive kidneys; salty human portions overload them quickly and raise blood pressure.
What is the better meat treat?
Plain cooked chicken or turkey — unprocessed, unsalted and close to the natural prey profile.
