Can cats eat raw meat?

In principle cats can digest raw meat — but hygiene risks and, above all, raw pork are serious caveats. Proper raw feeding (BARF) needs knowledge and supplements.

Why raw meat for cats?

A cat that catches a mouse eats raw meat — so the question is less whether cats can, and more whether kitchen meat is safe and complete. Raw feeding done right (BARF) mimics prey with meat, organs and precisely dosed supplements such as taurine and calcium. Done casually — a strip of supermarket meat here and there — it adds hygiene risks without nutritional completeness. Raw pork is a hard no.

How much is okay?

Occasional raw treats of fresh beef or poultry from trusted sources are tolerated by most cats. A full raw diet only with a properly calculated plan or complete frozen BARF menus.

How to feed it?

Only fresh, human-grade meat, cold chain intact, served fresh and bowls cleaned thoroughly. Never raw pork (Aujeszky virus risk — rare but fatal for cats), no raw wild boar, and no meat that has sat around.

Risks & caution

Salmonella, campylobacter, listeria and parasites threaten cat and household hygiene; immunocompromised people in the household are a reason to skip raw feeding. Unbalanced raw rations cause deficiencies over time. Raw pork can transmit the fatal Aujeszky virus.

Can kittens have raw meat?

For kittens, raw feeding is only advisable under expert guidance — their nutrient needs are strict and mistakes hit growing bodies hardest.

Signs of intolerance

Vomiting, diarrhoea or fever after raw meat warrant a vet visit. Neurological signs after raw pork are an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Is BARF good for cats?

Done correctly, it can work well — but the ration must be precisely supplemented with taurine, calcium and vitamins. For beginners, complete frozen BARF menus or high-quality wet food are the safer route.

Why is raw pork forbidden?

Raw pork can carry the Aujeszky virus, which is invariably fatal for cats. Germany is largely free of it in domestic pigs, but the risk via wild boar remains — raw pork stays off the menu.

Can I feed supermarket minced beef raw?

Fresh, same-day minced beef is tolerated by most cats as an occasional treat. It is not a complete diet and hygiene must be strict.

What about raw chicken?

Poultry carries salmonella and campylobacter risks. If raw feeding, source carefully and maintain strict hygiene — or cook it and stay safe.
