Can cats eat fish?

Only in small amounts

Cooked, boneless fish is fine as an occasional treat and provides valuable fatty acids. Raw fish, smoked fish and fish as a daily staple are unsuitable.

Why fish for cats?

Contrary to the cliché, fish is not a natural staple for cats — their ancestors were desert hunters of mice, not anglers. Still, cooked fish delivers high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids and is a welcome change for many cats. The form matters: cooked and boneless it is a good treat; raw, smoked or salted it causes problems.

How much is okay?

A small portion once a week is plenty. Fish should complement the diet, not dominate it — a complete cat food remains the base.

How to feed it?

Cook or steam fish without seasoning and remove all bones. Suitable are lean varieties such as cod, pollack or salmon (the latter in moderation, it is fattier). Unsuitable are raw fish (thiaminase, parasites), smoked and cured fish (salt), breaded fish and anything in sauce.

Risks & caution

Raw fish destroys vitamin B1 via thiaminase and can carry parasites. Frequent fish feeding unbalances the ration; smoked and salted products strain the kidneys. Fish bones can injure throat and gut.

Can kittens have fish?

For kittens, fish is unnecessary; if at all, a mini piece of cooked, boneless fish for older kittens. The base remains kitten food.

Signs of intolerance

Vomiting, diarrhoea or itching after fish can indicate intolerance or an allergy — fish is actually one of the more common feline food allergens. In that case, remove fish from the menu.
