Can cats eat garlic?

KSkittyscout editorial team · Last updated 08/2026
Toxic – do not feed

No — garlic is even more concentrated in toxic sulphur compounds than onion. Also as powder or in "natural" flea remedies, garlic is off limits for cats.

Which substance is dangerous?

Garlic belongs to the alliums and carries their red-cell-destroying sulphur compounds in higher concentration than onions. It damages red blood cells and triggers haemolytic anaemia. The stubborn folk belief that garlic repels fleas leads to chronic micro-dosing — precisely the slow poisoning cats cannot afford.

How much is dangerous?

Gram for gram, garlic is roughly five times as potent as onion. Even a small clove is a relevant dose for a cat, and repeated tiny amounts (seasoning, supplements) accumulate.

Symptoms of poisoning

As with onion: early vomiting and diarrhoea, then delayed anaemia with weakness, pale gums, fast breathing and dark urine after one to several days.

Emergency: what to do?

Garlic eaten or "flea garlic" given? Contact the vet, state amount and duration. Stop any garlic-containing supplement immediately — effective, safe flea treatments exist at the vet.

Frequently asked questions

Does garlic help against fleas?

No — that is a persistent myth. Garlic does not repel fleas reliably and poisons the cat in the process. Use proven antiparasitics from the vet.

Is a tiny bit of garlic in food scraps okay?

No. Garlic is more potent than onion, and repeated small doses add up. Seasoned leftovers stay off the cat menu.

Are garlic supplements for pets safe?

For cats, no. Whatever the label promises — alliums damage feline red blood cells. Do not use them.

How is allium poisoning treated?

The vet monitors blood values and treats supportively; severe anaemia may need intensive care. Early presentation improves the outlook considerably.
