Can cats drink milk?
Regular cow's milk is unsuitable: most adult cats cannot digest lactose and react with diarrhoea. Water is the right drink; lactose-free cat milk is at most an occasional treat.
Why milk for cats?
The image of a cat happily lapping from a saucer of milk is one of the most persistent myths in cat keeping. In reality, most adult cats lose the ability to digest lactose after weaning, because the body stops producing enough lactase. Undigested milk sugar then ferments in the gut — with diarrhoea, flatulence and stomach ache as the result. Milk is also energy-dense and contributes to weight gain.
How much is okay?
Cow's milk should not be on the menu at all. If you want to offer something milky, use lactose-free special cat milk from the pet shop — and even that only in small amounts as an occasional treat, not as a drink replacement. The everyday drink is and remains fresh water.
How to feed it?
If cat milk, then only the lactose-reduced products made for cats, at room temperature and in a small dish. Condensed milk, cream and flavoured milk drinks are unsuitable — too much sugar, too much fat. Never use milk to replace water, and offer several water stations away from the food instead.
Risks & caution
The main risk is digestive upset from lactose intolerance. In addition, cat milk is a calorie bomb that quickly promotes overweight if given regularly. Cats with sensitive digestion, overweight or diabetes should not get milk products at all.
Can kittens have milk?
Kittens digest their mother's milk — but cow's milk is not a substitute: its composition does not fit and it often causes diarrhoea, which is dangerous for kittens. Orphaned kittens need special kitten rearing milk from the vet or pet shop.
Signs of intolerance
Typical signs of intolerance are diarrhoea, flatulence, belly ache and vomiting a few hours after drinking. If they appear, remove milk from the menu entirely. See a vet if diarrhoea persists or the kitten or cat becomes listless.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't cats tolerate milk?
After weaning, most cats produce hardly any lactase and can no longer break down the lactose in cow's milk. The undigested sugar ferments in the gut and causes diarrhoea.
Is lactose-free cat milk okay?
As an occasional treat in small amounts, yes. It remains energy-dense, though — regular servings promote weight gain. It never replaces water.
What should cats drink?
Fresh water, always available in several places away from the food bowl. Wide bowls and drinking fountains encourage many cats to drink more.
May kittens have cow's milk?
No. Cow's milk does not match their needs and often causes dangerous diarrhoea. Orphaned kittens need dedicated kitten rearing milk.
My cat drank milk and seems fine — lucky?
Some cats tolerate small amounts. That is the exception, not the rule — and even then milk remains an unnecessary calorie bomb. Do not make it a habit.
